Blog Entry: You Are What You Eat! Does Your Diet Complement Your Skincare Regiment? By Penelope Tiam-Fook, Rodan & Fields Consultant It’s officially February. Where did January go already! Now that it is officially the second month of the year, I find myself thinking about whether or not I can stick to my continued commitment to myself of New Year, New You. The post-holiday season is over, life is getting back to normal, and I am definitely working on losing much of my holiday weight that I have gained. And just recently, I decided to get back on the bandwagon and cut down on the sugary foods I love to eat during the winter like Oreo cookies, chocolate, bread, and milkshakes. There are times I would rather snack on these foods than eat a healthy dinner. But reality has reared its ugly head. Not only do I have weight to lose but I also want to keep my skin looking healthy. And eating foods that are on the high glycemic index like the ones mentioned, including potatoes, milk, white breads and fried foods, accelerate aging and causes skin conditions like rosacea and acne to rear their ugly heads. Healthy lifestyle choices and good skincare help delay the natural aging process and prevent various skin problems. A healthy diet matched with a quality skincare regimen can transform your skin from dull, dry and lifeless to clear, youthful and glowing. I enjoy helping people feel more confident about their own potential and what they believe they can accomplish. That requires each of us to begin with one essential component: Belief in Ourselves . This belief is definitely affected by how we look and feel about the person staring back at us in the mirror. If our skin doesn’t look healthy, our self confidence in our potential and dreams slide down our priority list. To feel confident and to be beautiful from the inside out, we must take that belief and turn it into action. So, I am walking the walk, not just talking the talk. I am committed to eating regular meals, especially breakfast which I tend to skip. Skipping meals is a big no-no. Skipping breakfast or working through lunch will cause you to crave and indulge in carbohydrate-rich snacks that are high in sugar, salt and fat. Instead eat a healthy, nutrient rich breakfast, lunch and dinner and have skin-friendly snacks at the ready like fresh antioxidant rich fruits and veggies (the more colorful, the better). Green apples and carrots are two of my favorite snacks dipped in almond butter. And from time to time, I will splurge, just a little bit, on those sweet foods I like as a reward for sticking to a regular workout and healthy lifestyle.
