Videos -vs- Live Teaching

We've all seen the videos of "how to..." at the store. We all buy them and promise ourselves to try something new. As a teacher of nine years, I'm often asked whether videos or classes are the best way to learn Belly Dance. I would have to say both, and here is why...
Teachers in a class setting have opportunity to correct posture, movement execution, and tell you if you are making progress. A video is a great way to accelerate your learning and boost your home practice time. A video cannot correct you when you are doing something dangerous or harmful, and it can not tell you if you are doing movement correctly in context of Middle Eastern Culture or tradition. A teacher cannot be with you at home while you practice.
Videos are tools to be used when there is no class in your area, or you would like to get a jump start on a style. Videos can motivate you to practice at home and try new things in your dance.
Teachers are priceless in that they are often walking knowledge banks of information on Middle Eastern dance, culture, and music. You can ask a teacher a question and receive feedback that will help you grow as a dancer.
If you've tried a Belly Dance DVD, book, or OnDemand exercise program on TV, also try finding a teacher and class in your area. The experience is so much more full and enjoyable for students. Bring questions you might have about the things you've already tried and learned. You will already have a spring board into a firm foundation of belly dance moves, so don't be afraid to join a class.
