Why is it called Belly Dance?

Is there really much belly in Belly Dance?

The majority of the dance truly centers around the hips, arms, foot patterns, shimmies, and accent work.  So, why is it called belly dance?

Belly Dance was the name given the dance at the 1893 World's Fair.  When the public heard about the danse du ventre, or belly dance, they could not wait to see this exotic dance.  Before that, the folk dance from Egypt was not selling seats.  During this time period the belly was considered naughty to talk about, much less look at, and of course naughty sells tickets.

There are movements, named camels or undulations, that use the abdomen and the torso.  These moves expand and contract, creating a waving motion.  Moves like the belly roll and belly flutter are popular, but are American add ons to the dance.

Dancers today refer to belly dance as Raqs Sharqi (rocks sharky), Middle Eastern Dance, or Arabic Dance.  There is so much more to belly dance than the belly.  It is a wonderful dance for a whole body.
