Belly dance is folk dance from the Middle East, and it's loved, learned, and passed on by everyone. Daughters learn from mothers, aunts, grandmothers and Sons learn from fathers, uncles, and grandfathers. Many of the moves are similar and shared through out the Middle East.
Men belly dance. Of course it's not called belly dance, but Raqs Sharki (Dance of the East) or Danse Oriental. It is age appropriate for everyone, from the youngest member of the family to the oldest. Everyone shares and enjoys the dance.
Now I don't get many men in my regular belly dance classes, usually only when a bet is lost, or someone is feeling adventurous. I have taught men and will continue if they show up. Women however, of all ages come to class regularly. The youngest child I've taught was six years old, and the most mature woman I've had the pleasure of teaching was in her seventies. Wow!
Folk dance is easier on the body than most western dance forms(not line dancing... dances from Europe and the US.) Belly dance is so easy on the body that you'll be surprised you are sweating and toning all over.
Just remember if you want to try belly dance and you don't think you'll be able to do it... It's folk dance, we're folks, we can do it!
