Belly Dance Questions
OFFLINE

Posted On 08/25/2011 19:53:25 by AmyRenee
Every Spring and Fall Arabian Flair starts up a brand new Belly Dance Basics Class.  Like clock work I start getting questions about belly dance, and they are almost always the same.

I'm going to answer a few of them here.  If you come up with one of your own questions, contact me!  I would love to help answer it.

Do you need a flat tummy to belly dance?
The answer is no.  However, we do allow people with flat tummies into class.  Belly dance is not body shape specific.  It is not a class requirement to show your tummy, either.  Belly dance does not require you to bare your midriff.  I usually ware a t-shirt or tank with yoga pants to class, so even the teacher is "fully dressed!"

Do the dance moves in belly dance mean something?
Yes, the moves can mean something.  However, you are not telling a story in the same way the Hula(Hawaiian Dance) tells a story.  The dance moves that make up belly dance are to show off skill and grace.  The dancer uses these moves to become a visual representation of the music.  Unlike Hula, telling a very specific story with a language of the hands and body, you won't be calling anyone a bad name if you get a belly dance move a little wrong.

The last question needs a bit of set up.  At the end of an Arabian Flair Belly Dance class, I was approached by a student who asked "Why can't I dance just like you?  It looked so easy!"
To which I replied, I think I have 13 years on you there!  Belly dance looks easy, and bravo to the dancer who made it look easy.  It means she has taken years to perfect her skills.  You can learn to belly dance in a few short months, but you can take a lifetime to make it look easy and graceful.  Don't get disappointed at the first class if you can't move exactly the way you want to.  Give it a few classes, practice at home, and ask questions of your teacher.  You'll be picking up moves in no time!

The only silly question is the one not asked!  Let me know if you come up with new questions you'd like answered.  Feel free to send them to me by e-mail (Renee@arabianflair.com), leave a comment on this blog, or visit the Arabian Flair Group page here on Tallahasseegrapevine.com and post a topic.  I look forward to hearing from you!
