Arabian Flair, Modern Belly Dance Company performed at Divine Union as part of the First Friday Gallery Hop events. This was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the dancers of Arabian Flair at their home studio, Divine Union, Wellness, Art, and Spiritual Co-op. And the people of Tallahassee were impressed.
Arabian Flair started the evening off with Razi decorating the arms and hands of passers by with henna temorary tattoos. Her designs range from traditional North African and Arabic, to modern designs.
When the other performers arrived and were warmed up, they dazzled the crowds with Middle Eastern Belly Dance, drumming, and popular Middle Eastern pop music. There was cane dancing (raqs assaya, pronounced rocks a-sigh-a-ya), veil dancing, and finger cymbal playing, all accompanied by live drumming.
As the evening cooled off and more peopled arrived, Arabian Flair gave complimentary belly dance lessons to some of the guest who stopped to watch the performance. The crowd became part of the performance and everyone had a very good time during the lesson.
Arabian Flair took many questions about belly dance and classes, as well as music and culture. The main topic was "Can anyone learn how to belly dance?", and the resounding answer was "Yes." Class meet weekly and meet at Divine Union in Railroad Square, Tuesdays at 6pm.
If you saw Arabian Flair's dancers, we'd love to hear what you thought! Feel free to join our group here on the "Groups" page, under the "Dance" category. You are also welcome to leave a comment to this blog. Arabian Flair is always interested in connecting with the Tallahassee community.
