So you gotta hand it to a lot of people... during this recession it is hard for everyone to make ends meet... but if you go to the flea market, you got people setting up booths in hopes to make a few extra bucks.
It seems like they go through dumpsters or offer to help clean out your shed to get most of this stuff... maybe they buy out a yard sale. But they do it to get by, which is better than getting by off the government and not trying to do anything.
It is inspiring, yet melancholy at the same time. Some of these people have no idea that half the stuff they are selling will never sell. I know it is $18 for a booth there, and I saw a guy there last weekend that had about $10 worth of stuff on his table. He couldn't even make a profit if he sold out!
They say one man's trash is another man's treasure, but be realistic. No one wants a fax machine from 1994 unless they are making a movie set in 1994 - and odds are they are not going to be at the Tallahassee Flea Market looking for props.
There are people there that I know are not making a profit or maybe bringing in $10 after expenses... seriously... but they are determined that the person that wants this particular scratched up dvd of Goblin Women in Space in a cardboard sleeve for $3 is bound to walk past any day now and gosh darnit, I'm gonna be here when they do. The day I quit is the day someone wants that dusty shoe shine kit I found in the dumpster at my apartment complex.
One good thing at the flea market is the fruits and veggies. Good stuff, from Southern farms - not foreign countries - and low prices. A lot less than grocery stores or even the Downtown Marketplace.
I will still go to the Tallahassee Flea Market looking for a treasure. Maybe I'll see you there. Happy hunting.
