The Greek Island of Corfu
|
Northern Italy by Land & Med Cruise 2011 with Phil & Carol Swartz September 24, 2011 | Another beautiful day! We have arrived at our first Greek destination - the island of Corfu. We dock just outside the town of Corfu. That's right. The name of the island is Corfu and then just to confuse the tourists, they named the capital city Corfu.
| OK. So Corfu (the island) is in the Ionian Sea and is the second largest of the Ionian Islands. Corfu (the city) is the capital with a population of just over thirty thousand. So it's a small capital and easy to get around on foot. We started with the fortress guarding Corfu (the town), visiting the various vantage points to view both the city and the harbor. We found a small outdoor cafe and had a very good lunch - Greek salad and Gyros. We then set off to discover the rest of the area of the old city. Carol and her friend, Marilyn, naturally did some shopping.

| Corfu (the island) is connected to the history of Greece from the beginning of Greek mythology. Do you really want to know about his? OK. Here we go. Its Greek name, Kerkyra, is related to two powerful water symbols. Poseidon, god of the sea, and Asopos, an important Greek river somewhere on the mainland. According to myth, Poseidon fell in love with the beautiful nymph Korkyra, daughter of Asopus and river nymph Metope, and abducted her. Poseidon brought Korkyra to the hitherto unnamed island, and in marital bliss, offered her name to the place. Korkyra apparently gradually evolved to Kerkyra (the Greek name for Corfu - the island). There, I actually remembered it!
