Feed Your Head

Bagels are a very historic food.  Some people believe that they were created in the shape of a stirrup to commemorate the victory of Poland's King Jan III Sobieski over the Ottoman Turks in the Battle of Vienna in 1683.  But they were invented much earlier than that.  In Krakow, Poland, they were made and marketed as a competitor to bublik, which is a lean bread of wheat flour designed for Lent. In the 16th and first half of the 17th centuries, the bagel (bajgiel) became a staple of the Polish national diet. Since then the bagel has had a comfortable spot in many American diets.

Growing up in a south Florida town that had some amazing delis really set the bar high.  Every Sunday, after church, my parents would take my brothers and me out for breakfast to Bernie's Bagels.  Since I've been in Tallahassee, I haven't had a proper Sunday brunch until last year.  My friend wanted to meet up at Bagelheads to study for a final.  I got a B+ on the final and since then I've been frequenting the place fairly regularly for some coffee and my favorite Loxness Monster.
This past weekend I took Lindsay to have some brunch at the Bagelheads location on Apalachee Parkway and Blairstone Road.  Even though I've been there plenty of times, the music and the decor still has an uplifting effect on me.

I hadn't noticed the little designs on the mosaic tables but Lindsay loved how they coordinated with the sunny walls. "This place is so cute how each table has its own special design," Lindsay said as she peered over at the table next to us. The place had a good amount of seating considering that their lunch rush was always a big turnout.

One thing that sets Bagelheads apart is that every bagel they sell is made in-house.  Bagelheads is proud to say that they make their bagels from scratch.  On their website they say "We have a rule: if we would not serve it to you in our home, we will not serve it to you in our restaurant." You can taste the quality with every bite.  There's something healthier and cleaner about their bagels and I think it's due to the lack of unnecessary oils, fats, or preservatives.  Their sandwiches use Boar's Head deli meats which keeps in line with their devotion to premium ingredients.

I ordered my favorite breakfast sandwich, the Loxness Monster which has cream cheese, lox, tomatoes, onions and capers.  Since the first time I had it, I haven't ordered another breakfast item here.  Everything just comes together so deliciously that I can't think of getting anything else.  This place doesn't skimp on the lox either.  Lindsay ordered the Bagel Supreme with bacon, egg and cheddar cheese.

"This is really good but it's very hearty."  She pushed the plate towards me and said, "I'm definitely going to bring half of it home."

The sides really play a great side role to the sandwiches.  They come with Bagelhead's signature slaw which is unlike any cole slaw that I've had before. It's not as soupy and heavy as the conventional mayonnaise mess.  It has a light vinegar dressing that refreshes the palate.  You can also choose from a wide array of Deep River snack chips.  I usually get the jalapeno because I'm all about adding an extra kick to my sandwiches.

If you stop by for breakfast and it looks like you won't have time to leave the office for lunch, I would definitely recommend picking up a Bagel Stick for the road.  These Bagel Sticks resemble a football more than a wooden stick.  They're made up of soft bagel dough sprinkled with parmesan and they house some delicious meats and melted cheese.  My favorite is the Turkey and provolone and since the first time I bought one on the way out, it has become almost a regular habit of mine to leave with a yummy food stash.

 Her take away

+ I thought the Wi-Fi was a great idea.  Nothing is better than having a cup of coffee and reading up on the latest celebrity gossip.

+ The portions were big and I didn't feel gross after eating an egg and bacon sandwich like how I feel at Waffle House.

 His take away

+ If you're into a casual cafe experience with great deli food, this is the place to go.

+ Their music selection is great.  It had me going back into my old CD collection to listen to some of my old favorites.

I don't find Bagelheads to be expensive at all.  I can get a full healthy meal there for less than getting a combo meal at Mcdonalds.

You should try them out. In fact, there is a coupon for them in our Local Coupons Page.

This is like bagel and deli in Oxford, OH.  Except its clean and expensive.  I'm skeptical.
