GLAM Gyrlz Guide to Consignment Shopping

With the economy the way it is these days, it’s not hard to believe that more and more people have turned to thrift store shopping as a way of saving their hard earned dough.  I too have recently picked up this art of shopping and I must say I’m having a great time so far.  I never knew the amazing deals that were waiting for me at the local Goodwill.  There are quite a few thrift/consignment stores in Tallahassee that I plan on visiting in the future.  Plato’s Closet, Salvation Army, and The Other Side Vintage just to name a few.

In case you’ve been thinking about giving consignment shopping a try, here a few tips to help you maximize your experience and sharpen your deal finding techniques.

  • Always look for brand new finds.  If you take your time you can find some awesome deals on name brand clothing with the tags still on.  Seeing the original ticket price up against the reduced consignment price really let’s you see the savings you are receiving.
  • Have a plan.  It’s best to know what exactly you’re looking for when consignment shopping.  With so many options in each store it is easy to become overwhelmed if you go in unprepared.
  • Visit the local Goodwill on Mondays and receive 50% off clothing.  I was able to purchase a $128 Talbots skirt (with the tags still on) for only $15 using this tip.
  • Thrift stores offer many deals on different items such as furniture, books, and home goods.
  • Make sure you have set enough time for you to thoroughly scorer the racks to find the best deals.
  • Watch Planet Green’s new show Dresscue Me to learn how you can turn a Goodwill find into a trendy and stylish outfit.
  • Try things on!  I learned my lesson just last week when I purchased a very cute black cocktail dress only to rip the zipper trying to get it on.  It was a hilarious sight as I jumped around my bedroom trying to get this thing back over my head.  But the enormous rip in the back of the dress was no laughing matter for me.
  • Go often. Many times I’ve gone into the local Goodwill only to be disappointed with that days selection.  Visiting just two days later, I was able to find quite a few great deals and my favorite kind at that, the ones with the tags still on!

Do you have any consignment shopping tips to share?  We'd love to hear them!
