Belly Dance 101 Let you teacher guide you.
There are a few aspiring belly dance students that have asked, "What do I need to do to prepare for my first belly dance class?"
First of all make sure you know what you are getting into. Is the class a dance class or an exercise class? If it is a dance class, the teacher will expect (or a good one will expect) you to not know anything about the art known as belly dance. They should lead you along in a structured class with plenty of help and time for questions. If it turns out to be an exercise class, hang on for a wild ride! This is what we call a "follow the bouncing butt" style class. You will not really learn how to "dance," but will be thrown into the middle of a shaking, twirling, wiggling mess. Ask up front and know what you are getting into.
Be realistic about how much you will learn in the first class. Do ballet dancers learn everything in one class? Did your college professor spring out of his/her first lecture with a doctorate degree? No, so you should be ready to take it easy and enjoy the journey. There will be new and different movements that will be exotic or foreign to you. Realize your body has to become accustom to these new movements.
Make time to review and practice outside of class. As you begin your belly dance journey, you should take advantage of how excited you are. Plan some time at home that you can work on your new moves. Pick up a CD, or download some belly dance music that you can practice to. Bring a note book to class and write down some things to practice in the coming week. You'll increase your muscle memory and learn the moves faster, than if you just take the class once a week.
Ask questions about what you are learning. As a teacher, I appreciate questions. Questions help me, help my students. I am there to help you learn to belly dance. As the student, you should get your money's worth and speak up if you have questions. Most instructors will announce if they like to take questions during or before/after class.
Get to class first. There are many folks that say "I'm gonna loose 5 lbs.," or "I'm gonna buy some new workout clothes," or "I'm gonna get my husband to give me the okay", then I'll start belly dance classes. Don't wait! Start when you see the class announcement. If you want to belly dance there should be nothing stopping you!
I hope to see you in class soon. Arabian Flair Basic Belly Dance classes start May 3rd at 6pm, $10/class. There is a whole world of wonderful dance waiting for you. Nothing can hold you back, get out there and shimmy!
Dance on! Amy Renee www.arabianflair.com
