A Tallahassee Classic:

World Ballet Rocks!

CHECK THIS OUT:

This is a montage of scenes from the past 3 "World Ballet Rocks" & "Rock the Diamond" productions.  The 2011 show featured a live rock band, CommonZenZ and the FAMU Strikers.  The show gets bigger and better every year.

World Ballet presents its 4th annual production featuring a Rock Ballet. Henry Hernandez, Artistic Director of World Ballet, is the brainchild behind WORLD OF ROCK. This performance is daringly different and promises to be a vivid and exciting mix of adventurous choreography, memorable live music by local rock band CommonZenZ , and high-intensity dancing. This combination is a multimedia celebration of  dance, original costumes and rock music.

Together World Ballet and CommonZenZ will perform such crowd favorites as The Beatles, AC/DC, The Who, Led Zeppelin, John Lennon and much more. World of Rock will leave a lasting impact on the way you view a classical/contemporary trained ballet dancer and what they can do.

As an extra layer surprise World Ballet has fused in the high-energy and  deeply spirited FAMU Strikers. The Strikers have been dazzling audiences for over twenty-two years and appeared on every major television network in the country.

The performances will take place Saturday, May 5th at 7:30pm and Sunday, May 6th at 2:30pm at Lee Hall Auditorium, FAMU Campus. World Ballet Nutcracker Performance Inspires Many
Posted On 12/14/2011 13:03:16

First, President Obama - Now, The Sugar Plum Fairy: Maybe “WE” Have Overcome!!!

 By Cecka Rose

This afternoon, I experienced an event that literally brought me to tears. Ultimately, what I witnessed has single-handedly renewed my pipe-dream that things just may be changing for African Americans in this country.

My sister told me about a month ago that she was buying tickets to The World Ballet's production of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker—a ballet performance made internationally famous through George Balanchine's choreography performed by the New York City Ballet (NYCB).

Each Christmas, the NYCB continues to perform a version of this holiday classic. And…I don't have to tell you that this has traditionally been a production lacking in *clears throat* Black folk.

The World Ballet—founded by Henry Hernandez in Tallahassee, FL (who also serves as the company's artistic director)—for the past few years has performed a version of The Nutcracker. Frankly, I have not been interested in attending any of the past performances. Sight unseen, I used my own recollection as the only little Black girl in 1977 chosen for the corps de ballet (i.e., a large group of dancers) for The Gainesville Ballet's traditional rendition of the famed piece, to prematurely judge The World Ballet as producing another traditionally, all-White performance.

Rachael Jones,

Sugar Plum Fairy

See, nearly 34 years ago, I was the “token.”

The Gainesville Ballet was coming to town to perform the Nutcracker and they needed dancers for the small, group parts; I had the nerve to audition…and they had the guts to pick me. My mom was so proud, too. She made my dress…a beautifully sewn peacock blue velvet, with a full petticoat slip and knee-length white bloomers. She pressed and curled my hair into Shirley Temple curls (back then, I had really long, black hair, so it was truly “bouncin' and behavin' LOL!). It was only after the three- or four-night production that I realized that I was the ONLY one…there was not one other girl who looked like me. Not even the damn Rat King!

But, that was not the case this afternoon. The World Ballet not only adapted The Nutcracker to be inclusive of African Americans, but also Asians, Hispanics, young and matured. And, I should have known by the title of the production, it was going to be different: “The Nutcracker: A Diversity Celebration.” I

sat there with my sister and my 8 and 10-year-old daughters watching several of the most beautiful and talented young Black girls dance some of the major roles of the production…most memorable of which was the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy,” performed by Rachael Jones. I was instantly taken back to the night that President Obama was announced the victor in the 2008 Presidential election.

That night, I had a renewed hope for my son—a Black boy who I will tell many times over “you can be anything you want to be…even President of the United States of America!” Now, I have a renewed hope for my daughters because they can be the Sugar Plum Fairy, the White/Black Swan (from Swan Lake)…and they don't have to go all the way to New York and join the Dance Theatre of Harlem or Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre to get there.

SIDEBAR:

This production of The Nutcracker even featured members of nationally acclaimed “FAMU STRIKERS!” And, Marcus Bailey–who also teaches at the World Ballet school–danced as the “Nutcracker.”

*dries my eyes and composes myself…and I'm back!*

The FAMU Strikers

With hard work, focused energy and dedication to a craft, in the Deep South, in a mid-sized, mostly suburban, college-centered town in Florida, my girls can be transformed into the fantastic and wonderfully beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy. Then, not only will my husband and I know how special and beautiful they are, so will everyone who chooses to embrace Mr. Hernandez's absolutely awesome interpretation of this timeless classic.

Just when I think it's getting worse, I see the Sugar Plum Fairy…and I know, one day, WE will get there. Thank you, Rachael, Mr. Hernandez, and the entire World Ballet. You have given me hope, once again.

World Ballet:

The Evolution of The Nutcracker

The Holiday Season is coming quickly.  One tradition is to take the family to see The Nutcracker.  We love the dancing, the music, the beautiful sets and elaborate costumes during the performance, but we don't realize how much work goes into putting on such a production.  In fact, the planning starts during the hot summer months when Christmas is furthest from anyone's mind.

In these articles leading up to World Ballet's performance of "The Nutcracker: A Diversity Celebration", we want to share with you the process of how a Nutcracker truly comes to life.

World Ballet: How To Do Stretches & Splits
Posted On 10/04/2011 21:13:19

Ballet for Kids:

Learn to do Stretches & Splits at the Barre

by Henry Hernandez, World Ballet

Hello Kids!

Today the Ballerinas are going to demonstrate Stretching at the Barre.

At home, you would hold onto the back of a chair.

Stretch is important for dancers because it prevents injury. It also improves extension, which, in turn, develops steps such as grande jetes and developes. Perform a variety of stretches daily to improve your flexibility.

While sitting, spread your legs apart as far on either side of you as possible. Bending from the waist, stretch your body over the left leg. Move your torso slowly to center, and then slowly over your right leg.

World Ballet Students

Quinn Huckaba, Age 11 - Level III & Shelby Shumate, Age 8 - Level II

Practice your split on the ground for at least five minutes every day. Remember to point your toes, straighten your knees, and turn out. Once you are able to have both legs flat against the ground during your split, you can deepen your stretch by placing your front foot on stacks of books.

Work on these stretches with your teacher. Do not overstretch. To learn how to stretch and improve your overall technique, come take classes at World Ballet. Call us at (850) 553-3315.

World Ballet: Learn to do Plies
Posted On 09/21/2011 11:06:28

Ballet for Kids:

Learn to do Plies

by Henry Hernandez, World Ballet

Hello Kids!

Today Shelby is going to demonstrate a plie (pronounced PLEE-AY).

At home, you would hold onto the back of a chair.

A Plie is a bend at the knees. A "Demi-Plie" is a half bend and a "Grand-Plie" is a full bend at the knees.

Start by standing at the "First Position" with your legs together, heels together and toes pointed out. (See Photo)

When doing a Demi-Plie, you should count to 1 on the way down and 1 on the way back up. When doing a Grand Plie, count to 2 going down and 2 back up.

Keep Practicing!

We will have a new

technique coming soon!
